NOW OPEN: American Friends of Herculaneum 2020 scholarship competition

The Board and Trustees of the American Friends of Herculaneum are pleased to announce that the competition for AFoH Scholarships is now open.

Since 2015 the AFoH has awarded annual scholarships to undergraduates ($1500) and graduate/post-doc students ($2500) who are engaging the scholarship of ancient Herculaneum. 2019 winners were Daniel Healey, PhD candidate (Princeton) studying archaistic statuary styles manifest at Pompeii and Herculaneum, and Claudio Vergara, an undergraduate at the Federico II University of Naples who is undertaking a digital reworking of H. Usener's monumental Glossarium Epicureum. As previous recipients of the award have done, Vergara and Healey published reports of their work in Herculaneum Archaeology, the semiannual publication of the Friends of Herculaneum (Oxford).

The AFoH scholarships are intended to support research on topics related to Herculaneum (preferably) or other related ancient sites around the Bay of Naples. Eligible topics include, but are not limited to archaeology, architecture, art history, conservation, history, historiography, papyrology, philology, and so forth.

AFoH scholarships are open to undergraduate and graduate students from all backgrounds. Minority and disadvantaged students are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be members of the AFoH at the time of application; the recipient should remain a member at least until the end of the scholarship period. See herculaneumfriends.org for information about joining the society.

Each applicant should submit a letter of application to AFoH President, Professor Carol Mattusch: mattusch@gmu.edu. The best letters will describe the proposed project in detail, including dates and a tentative budget, clearly explaining how the funds will be used. Supporting documentation is welcome, but not necessary.

A letter from an advisor or supervisor should be sent directly to Prof. Mattusch at the same email address, mattusch@gmu.edu.
ALL application materials (including reference, transcript, application form, letter of application) must be received electronically by the AFoH president before April 1, 2020.

Notification of the award is anticipated by May 1, 2020.

Successful candidates will be expected to submit reports of their activities to the American Friends of Herculaneum trustees by about the beginning of October. These reports may be edited for publication in Herculaneum Archaeology, normally appearing in the subsequent Winter publication but also on the website.

For clarification, contact either Prof. Mattusch or Prof. Roger Macfarlane (macfarlane@byu.edu).
